We should try "trickle up' instead

To the editor:

During a recent speech given in Ohio, Rep. Paul Ryan from Janesville said that he and his running mate Mitt Romney "would work to help the one in six Americans in poverty climb into the middle class and help keep those already in the middle class on solid financial footage." He also said "we deserve better. We deserve a clear choice for a brighter future."

Nice words but neither he nor Romney offered anything concrete as how to achieve their goal.

For the last 25 years or so, corporate tax cuts, tax loop-holes, de-regulations and other ways to help the wealthy have been in place with the intent that this wealth would (trickle down) and boost the economy. This robust economy would create jobs and allow everyone to have the opportunity to live the "American Dream." We are still waiting for this "trickle down" windfall.

I have a suggestion for Paul and Mitt. Just raise the minimum wage to $10 or $15 per hour and allow prosperity to "trickle up." This "trickle up" theory may not work as did not the "trickle down" theory, but perhaps it may prevent those in poverty from being "trickled on."

Also during this speech, Rep. Ryan said we can escape poverty through education. "Sending your child to a great school should not be a privilege of the well-to-do."

I agree. We definitely should not decrease funding for public schools to subsidize private schools. Everyone should be offered access to quality education.
