From Barbara Meyer, Town of Wiota

To the editor:

A recently released video reveals Scott Walker telling a major donor in January 2011 of his plan to destroy the public unions, to "divide and conquer." Now he admits that he should have done things differently, taken more time to explain things more fully. Yes, his program of hurry up and push his pet projects through before people were aware of what was going on was irresponsible. But he also has not admitted that the programs he signed into law so quickly were not good laws. He has not really changed.

He believes that the huge cuts he made to public schools, including higher education, were justified, as were the big tax breaks he gave to big businesses and the very wealthy. I think we all know better, as we see our schools forced to cut teachers and programs, and college tuition rising beyond the reach of many. And did big businesses and other very wealthy people really need a tax break?

Voter photo ID, championed by Walker, was a solution to a problem which does not exist, and would have disenfranchised many elderly, disabled, minority, and student voters. Fortunately, the courts intervened and that law has not been implemented. His attempt to remove the numbers of people he wanted from Medicaid and Badger Care was also thwarted, by federal authority. Walker is not "for" the people.

In Tom Barrett we will have a very different type of leader. His diverse experience and his strong will to heal our divided state will help him to work with the legislature to lead Wisconsin forward once again. Our state has been divided, it is true, but we are not conquered, nor will we be. Do your part. Vote for Tom Barrett for governor.
