Vicki Evenson: How can families cope with health care costs and lack of insurance

While there is no good answer to a family not having health care coverage in these economic times, a family must learn to make the most of the resources available. We encourage parents to become as knowledgeable as possible about public programs and utilize them to maximize precious dwindling dollars for health care.

First, parents must enroll in whatever public insurances or other programs through Green County Economic Support Services. Contact that unit at 328-9344 to explore your options.

Next, women who are pregnant or lactating and families with children up to the age of 5 should check to see if they are income eligible for Green County Health Department's WIC program. This is a nutrition counseling and voucher program that can supplement a young family's food budget by hundreds of dollars each month.

Another Green County Health Department offering that can save thousands of dollars per child is Wisconsin's Vaccine for Children program (VAC). The Green County Health Department provides free vaccine through VAC to fully immunize children to prevent childhood communicable diseases. Paying for a full regime of vaccinations from a private medical provider will be approximately $2,000 per child.

These programs, along with lead testing, water sampling of private wells for pregnant women and new mothers, and fluoride varnishes are just a few ways to save medical costs for your family. Call the Green County Health Department at 328-9390 to check out your eligibility and enroll today.

The issue of no or limited dental care access for Medicaid, BadgerCare, and those who are underinsured or not insurance has become a huge issue. It has long been recognized that having dental problems can affect one's whole well-being. Children are not able to concentrate in school when plagued with a toothache. Their nutritional status is impaired when chewing is painful. In the long term, people with dental carries and/or low-grade chronic infections from poor teeth are in danger of systemic infections and cardiac problems secondary to these infections.

The Green County Health Department, Monroe Clinic and other community partners in the Healthy Communities Coalition have taken up the cause of poor dental care access in this community. We are working with the Southwest Community Action Program to establish a free dental clinic, which will be housed at the Green County Health Department. Free space and equipment have been procured, grants are being written, and local dentists are being asked to donate a few hours every month or two to support the effort. At the onset, the clinic will accept pediatric clients with emergency problems.

Last, we would like families to think prevention when it comes to health. That old penny spent, dollar saved adage really holds true on this issue. Do whatever it takes to stay healthy. Get immunized, exercise, do not use tobacco products, maintain a healthy weight, and eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. We realize this does not replace good health and dental care, so we are committed to offering the public health programming to this area. Call us at 328-9390 to check out your eligibility for services.
