Treated poorly, stuck with dog

Green County taxpayer funds support the Green County Humane Society, as well as the City of Monroe funds, through a signed contract for being animal control. This includes taking in all stray animals in Green County. While taking my daughter to Thursday soccer practice at Twining Park weeks ago, I noticed cars swerving around a dog in the road. I stopped to pick up this dog rather than to return to find it dead. I asked everyone in the park, but nobody recognized it. I took it home and called the Monroe Police Department to report the stray dog. They told me to call the Green County Humane Society. A woman answered and said they would pick up the dog on Monday. I thought it was presumptuous to assume that I could keep the dog four more days. I stayed home on Monday and finally around 4 called the shelter to see what time they were coming. The answering machine stated they are closed on Monday. How convenient. I called back on Tuesday, and the lady said they would get back to me (how convenient again.)

I have not spoken to anyone since, so I have been knocking on doors desperately trying to find the dog's owner myself. At wits end, my daughter and I took the dog to the shelter Tuesday, Sept. 21, and we were treated very rudely, by both the receptionist and the manager. They stated I have cared for the dog too long and it was now mine. What about scanning the dog for a micro-chip so it can find it's real home? What about logging in the dogs breed and where it was found? What if the owner had called looking for their lost dog? What makes these people think I want another dog?

I did follow the police department directions, and actually thought I was helping the dog and sheltering by keeping it from Thursday to the following Monday, only to be treated so rudely. I followed the law, and am stuck with this dog. What about this animal not being current on vaccinations, being around the dog, my children, and the neighborhood children? Is this a lawsuit waiting to happen to me?

I contacted an elected official on the Green County Board about a month ago, and have received no response. Now what?
