As we begin 2025, it’s an ideal time to pause and reflect on the remarkable progress we made in 2024. There’s a timeless truth about success: it often starts slow, like pushing a flywheel, requiring consistent effort to build momentum. But once it takes off, the results can be extraordinary. Looking back on the past year, it’s clear that we’ve reached that turning point at Green County Development Corporation (GCDC), accelerating critical initiatives that strengthen our community and drive meaningful progress.

At GCDC, our mission is to make Green County a vibrant place to live, work, and grow. That vision comes to life through the measurable impact of our efforts. In 2024, for every dollar invested in GCDC, we delivered a $29.40 in return. This achievement underscores the tangible value of our work and highlights the power of collaboration and innovation.

The Power of Partnerships

None of our successes would be possible without the incredible support of our partners and investors. Economic development is a team sport, and every milestone we achieve is a testament to what we can accomplish together. Collaboration fuels progress, and 2024 was filled with examples of the collective impact we can create when we unite around shared goals.

Housing: Laying the Groundwork for the Future

Addressing the need for housing in Green County was a major focus in 2024. The Home Construction Cooperative, now in its second year, exemplifies this commitment. With land generously donated by the City of Monroe, 17 students from Monroe and Juda school districts worked to build a new home, gaining valuable hands-on experience. The success of this initiative wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of over 40 organizations. This innovative program also earned recognition at both the state and international levels, winning awards from the Wisconsin Economic Development Association (WEDA) and the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

In addition to construction projects, we expanded our efforts into housing education. Partnering with UW Extension Green County, we hosted three sessions covering topics such as accessory dwelling units (ADUs), co-op housing models, and renewable energy. Meanwhile, updated housing studies from the Southwest Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission provided crucial insights, revealing the need for 1,761 new units by 2030 to sustain just a 1% population growth. These findings will guide our strategy as we continue this important work in 2025.

 Building Leadership

The Green County Leaders program remains a cornerstone of our community development efforts. Last year we had a record 36 participants. By connecting participants to industries, nonprofits, and civic opportunities, this program cultivates leadership while driving tangible results. One highlight from 2024 was the Monticello beautification project, where GCDC partnered with the Green County Leaders community project group to secure a grant connecting downtown to local trails.

Supporting Small Businesses

Entrepreneurship and small business growth are essential to a thriving local economy. In 2024, GCDC hosted initiatives like the Small Business Series, the Pitch Contest, and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Clinic, empowering local entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into reality. Through the Revolving Loan Fund, we also provided low-interest loans that helped businesses expand, contributing to the local tax base and economic stability. These efforts resulted in 10 new businesses, $1.75 million in new owner investments, 15 new jobs, and support for 133 clients — a testament to the program’s success.

Talent Development and Education

Another significant achievement in 2024 was securing a $2 million grant for workforce development in the skilled trades and manufacturing sectors. This highly competitive grant, awarded in partnership with the Monroe School District, will support the construction of a new tech education wing at Monroe High School. This project is a major step forward in preparing our community for the future, equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing economy.

Additionally, we hosted numerous educational events designed to engage and inform the public. From a fall breakfast focused on innovation and entrepreneurship to succession planning workshops and community conversations, these events connected people with valuable insights and resources. A Creative Arts Summit, organized in partnership with regional development groups, shed light on the arts’ economic impact, further broadening our community’s understanding of key drivers for growth.

A Year of Momentum

While these accomplishments are noteworthy, they represent just a fraction of what was achieved in 2024. This year was about more than individual successes — it was about building momentum and laying the groundwork for a brighter future.

As we enter 2025, we carry with us the lessons and progress of the past year. At GCDC, we remain committed to fostering economic growth, enhancing quality of life, and strengthening our community. Through collaboration, innovation, and determination, we’re creating a Green County that continues to thrive. Together, we’ll keep pushing forward, building a place we’re all proud to call home.
