Thank you to spay, neuter event donors

February is National Prevent A Litter Month. It's an ideal time to remember how important it is to help prevent pet overpopulation and help end the needless suffering endured by the millions of dogs and cats that end up unwanted and homeless each year.

Encouraging spaying and neutering companion animals is a top priority for both the Green County Humane Society in Monroe and Everyone Needs A Home, South Wayne. To help provide this important service to low-income residents, the organizations joined forces on Oct. 29 and again on Jan. 29 to offer Free Spay/Neuter Days. The groups contracted with the Dane County Humane Society's mobile spay/neuter unit to come to Monroe and perform alteration surgeries on cats at no cost to pet owners with a financial need.

We were able to spay or neuter 30 cats at each event - that's 60 cats in just two events! We offer our deepest gratitude to the many volunteers who helped put this effort together and worked at the events, as well as Monroe Auto Sales for donating the use of its facility.

A very special thanks goes to the anonymous donor who funded half the cost of our second event. Funding from the United Way, used to spay and neuter cats for Green County residents, covered the other half of the cost. A third donor has already stepped forward to help underwrite a third event, tentatively planned for this spring.

We are excited and optimistic that this financial support will help us realize our goal of offering free spay/neuter events on an ongoing, quarterly basis.

We will continue to seek sponsorship for future events, and encourage donations by businesses, groups and individuals specifically for this important initiative.

If you or someone you know has unaltered pets, please make plans to have them spayed or neutered. For Green County residents who need financial assistance, GCHS has SNAP (Spay/Neuter Assistance Program) to help defray some of the cost of surgery at your local vets' office. Contact GCHS at 325-9600 for details.

As always, we appreciate your continued support of our efforts.
