Thank you to all who helped make Marrow Match a success

To the editor:

Many thanks are owed to the individuals and organizations that made the Marrow Match Monroe a great success. Through the efforts of over 70 volunteers, 566 persons were swabbed so their DNA could be part of the national register used to match with those with life threatening blood cancer, and over $6,000 was raised to help offset the cost of the testing the DNA samples collected. DKMS Americas provided valuable support and a superb system for putting on a bone marrow drive.

Special thanks to Miriam O'Neill, Greg Studer, Lester Nider and Stephanie Pink for sharing their personal stories about the importance of stem cell treatments.

Thanks to WEKZ, The Times and the Hometown Herald for their coverage of the drive, and to the Monroe Clinic, Colony Brands, and numerous businesses and individuals for their financial support. Thanks to the many college students and young adults who with their enthusiasm made the drive a success. They scoured the crowds finding potential donors waiting in the lines or watching the Cheese Days events, manned the drive headquarters and created the video on Facebook.com/Marrow Match Monroe.

Many stories could be told reflecting the impact blood cancer has on our lives, as well as the generosity and goodness of persons wanting to make a difference for others. One elderly lady, unable to be on the registry herself due to her age, made a donation because she had lost a son to cancer. Others came up to the information tables stated they had been the lucky recipient of a bone marrow transplant, or stated they had been on the registry for many years. Others traveled from Madison and out of state to register because they had seen the publicity about the Marrow Match Monroe. Yet there was also the sadness of learning that there were others in our community in need of a match to cure their blood cancers.

The success of this drive is but one step in the fight against blood cancer. Consider being on the registry yourself, make a donation, or participate in another drive by going to www.GetSwapped.org., or contacting DKMS at 33 E. 33rd St., Suite 501 New York, NY 10016. If you decide to make a donation, please reference the ONE002 drive.

Thanks again to everyone, and don't forget: Get Swabbed Save a Life.
