To the editor:
In Green County, Tammy Baldwin and Tommy Thompson are well-known candidates running for the U.S. Senate.
On the issues there is a clear choice. Tammy has supported lowering taxes on the middle class while Thompson ties his position into the Mitt Romney-Ryan budget: lower taxes on the high income brackets; tax increases for the rest of us.
You may have noted an ad that says Obamacare will raise your taxes. Well, not really. Starting in 2014 for those who refuse to buy health care, there will be a small tax on their 1040 return to pay for the cost we will all have to pay when that person needs health care. Since most of us already have insurance, or can get it under the new rules, this small tax seems pretty fair. If someone can buy a health care policy and doesn't, then why should the rest of us pay for those health care costs?
Thompson supports the Ryan Budget doing away with Medicare and Medicaid. On a recent video he says "whom better than me to do away with Medicare and Medicaid." Not "as we know it" but "do away with." Yes, we have to do more in means testing for these programs but "doing away with" means more and more folks needing care will turn to Monroe Clinic. Free to them of course, but if too many folks use the Clinic for unreimbursed care, doesn't that start to undermine the Clinic's financial stability? And doesn't that mean serious cuts in medical services for us all?
Lastly, I don't think we can ignore the fact that a vote for Tommy is a vote for a Republican majority in the U.S. Senate. We know what that means: The Ryan Budget; Double Down on Trickle Down; higher taxes on us; lower on high-income brackets. It just doesn't add up. Vote for Tammy Baldwin for U.S. Senate.
