Swiss Colony's offer is a good one for city

To the person who issued a barb to the Monroe City Council for deciding to accept Swiss Colony's offer to audit the City's human resources procedures: We are having a difficult time understanding your resentment of Swiss Colony's offer.

Maybe it is time for you to get more involved in civic affairs, or at least volunteer for some community activities, which would undoubtedly help you be better informed. If you did, you would realize that Swiss Colony has recently made some extremely generous contributions to the City of Monroe and its citizens. Let's start with a $50,000 check to Monroe Main Street to fund a professional evaluation and comprehensive plan for the revitalization of our downtown. Then consider its offer to make its accounting services available to straighten out the financial mess at the Green County Humane Society. Most recently, Swiss Colony has offered to help the City make sure it is on the right track in the human resources area.

Human resources is an extremely complex subject, and who other than a company such as Swiss Colony, with its need to employ so many people, could bear the expense of staying abreast of all the changes in laws that happen every day? In its position, it is necessary to run a tight ship and develop procedures that will keep it in compliance with the law. The company's willingness to share its expertise in this area is invaluable.

These are three enormous contributions which have taken place just in the past year, and each of them translates into money being saved by Monroe taxpayers. And these are just a few examples of the gifts we have received. All throughout the year, Swiss Colony dedicates money, manpower, equipment and product to a multitude of smaller events to make them "sweeter" for all the participants.

And is there an ulterior motive there? You bet there is! Swiss Colony is a successful, growing company, and has demonstrated its loyalty to Monroe by retaining its presence here in spite of the difficulty involved in recruiting a professional workforce to live and work in a small town with limited cultural and recreational resources. It, along with many others, is working hard to get Monroe up to speed so that all of its citizens (including potential new Swiss Colony employees) can have a good place to live without being overwhelmed by taxes. We should thank our lucky stars that Swiss Colony, the Kubly Family, John Baumann and others are attempting to make a difference. And we should be grateful that we have a city council and mayor who are smart enough to know a good deal when they see it!
