Green County HCE President
A few months ago, I wrote an article describing the Home, Community, and Education (HCE) organization of Green County (formerly Homemakers). Some history was given and it also drew attention to the innumerable activities we do for the betterment of Green County. Now, we do need your help. After attending the state convention as Green County HCE president, I learned only two counties in our Southwest District did not participate in the Wisconsin Bookworm Project and one is Green County.
Bookworms was established in 1997 and is an ongoing outreach project of Wisconsin Public Television, University of Wisconsin Extension Family Living Programs and the Wisconsin HCE.
The project's goals are to get children reading, to improve their knowledge and language skills by reading, having books in the home, and encouraging parents to participate in the child's reading activities by working together on activity sheets or to simply read the book with their children. Last year, HCE was awarded the Distinguished Chancellor's Award from the UW and all 16 Wisconsin Technical Schools for the Bookworm Project.
The program puts books directly in the hands of the children because each month volunteers read in the classroom and then the books are given to the children to keep.
Costumes, music, etc. can be used for added effects. In Green County we will read to the Head Start Children in a classroom at Abe Lincoln School from October to May. This includes the public and parochial schools in Monroe.
The books come eight to a set and each set costs $23. Currently the greatest need is to cover the book cost and to stay ahead for at least one additional year. We have set a goal of $1,500 to raise prior to beginning the program this fall. We will be having fundraisers and most gratefully welcome any private donations. If you could help us with the cost of part of a set or for a complete set, we appreciate it. Any amount will do. If you can spare one half-hour per month to read, please let me know. For monetary donations or materials, contact Kristi or Bridget at the UW-Extension office.
