As I read the article about Cinco de Mayo and restroom availability on the Square, I remembered Cheese Days 2006, which has thousands of visitors for its fabulous parade. We went to the Square, to the area just west of the Courthouse, and sat on the wall of the porch there to watch the parade. We were aware of all the portable restrooms on the outside of the Square, but on the inside up on the Courthouse area and lawn, there were no restrooms available during the parade to the many people on the courthouse lawn. The parade lasts two to three hours.
I am proud to say I am a native of Monroe and graduate of Monroe High School. Years ago, there were public restrooms in the basement of the Courthouse. If they are still there, I don't know. I would think with a lot of senior citizens that were up there, it's pretty hard to cross through the parade to find a restroom, let alone carry your chairs to do so so no one takes them.
I believe there should be portable restrooms for Cheese Days on the inside of the Square as a common courtesy to people gathered on the Courthouse lawn to watch the parade or entertainment. It's hard to go a block or so through a mob of visitors or through the parade and fight your way back. You miss a lot of what's going on in the parade and on stage. As Cheese Days is approaching again in September, I wanted to state my case for a lot of others that were there in 2006.
I haven't missed a Cheese Days since World War II ended.
