Sponsorships sought to help spay/neuter event

Every year, millions of unwanted dogs and cats end up homeless, many carelessly dumped and left to fend for themselves. These unwanted animals often face starvation, harsh conditions and needless suffering. But there is a solution to the overwhelming problem of pet overpopulation: Spaying and neutering your companion animals. Alteration is the most humane and cost-effective method of controlling our pet population.

Encouraging spaying and neutering is top priority for both the Green County Humane Society in Monroe and Everyone Needs A Home, South Wayne. To that end, the organizations co-sponsored a free Spay/Neuter Day Thursday, Oct. 29, to provide alteration surgeries for pets belonging to those with a financial need. We contracted with the Dane County Humane Society's mobile spay/neuter unit to come to Monroe and perform the surgeries. Monroe Auto Sales generously provided the facility and volunteers assisted with animal care and recovery.

What a success the event was! We were able to spay or neuter 30 cats from Green and Lafayette counties - that's 30 cats that will not be producing more litters and contributing to the problem of homeless and unwanted pets. We hope to be able to offer similar events providing affordable or no-cost access to spaying and neutering for both dogs and cats. From this one event, we have determined the interest and the need certainly exists to offer more spay/neuter events - we already have a considerable waiting list of people anxious to have their animals altered but needing financial assistance.

GCHS and ENAH are looking for sponsorship or financial underwriting to help continue this effort. We would welcome the opportunity to partner with any individual, business, civic or church organization that would like to see more spay/neuter events in the area.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. We are excited to have taken the first step. Please consider joining us and helping us continue this journey toward controlling the pet population by providing affordable, accessible spaying and neutering for all.
