This morning I was doing the breakfast dishes and I glanced out my window. On the corner were two children waiting for the traffic to clear so they could cross the street. A car stopped about 5 feet away from the corner to let the children safely cross. Before they were completely on the other side of the street, another car went flying through the intersection.
A chill went up my spine and my eyes got watery. You see, it was in January, there was snow on the ground, it was around 8 a.m. and I was walking to school when my life was changed forever.
Like every child, I had a dream. I was going to join the Navy. I was going to marry a man like my Daddy and I was going to have two children. On the morning of January 31, 1974 and around 8 a.m., I was walking to school with a girlfriend. We were almost across the street, when I felt my body being tossed up in the air and on the hood of another car. I rolled off the hood of that car and laid on the snowy street trying to breathe. The next thing I knew, I woke up in the hospital two days later.
I was in the hospital for four months. I had my left kidney removed, a part of my spleen removed, the bottom of my left lung and I was told that I would never have children. When I seen that car speed through the intersection this morning, I asked God to be with those children.
Drivers, please slow down. I know that you need to get to your destination, but is it really worth a child's life? Business owners, managers, and supervisors, please don't be a time bomb. After all, it may be your child or grandchild trying to cross the street. People, slow down.
