Sen. Jon Erpenbach: Staying closer to home this summer

Many families are planning on staying a little closer to home for vacation this summer. Whether you are planning a day trip to a local attraction like a fair or festival, a weekend get away of camping or a week away; the Wisconsin Department of Tourism has great suggestions for summer fun close to home.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to have a lot of fun this summer; think about day trips to some of Wisconsin's state and local parks. Most county and municipal parks are free and offer the chance to swim, fish, hike and just play with little or no cost. Camping also is a lower cost alternative for a family on a tighter budget this year. Borrow a tent and plan ahead to cook your own meals at your site. Camping sites are available at public parks all over Wisconsin, many still have sites that can be reserved - call the city, village or county park system.

Plan for travel by making sure your car has been serviced. Find out if road construction is on your route, and consider alternative routes; sometimes off the beaten path means a great adventure off the interstate. To stay up to date on construction projects, lane closures and other road conditions, use the WisDOT 511 Wisconsin Travel Info System at http://www.511wi.gov or by simply calling 511.

The Wisconsin Department of Tourism has many features, including a list of factory tours, Wisconsin's most unusual museums, fun family activities and even a list of outdoor theatres, many close to home, including the Monroe Sky-Vu Drive-In Theatre.

You can visit the Wisconsin Department of Tourism Web site anytime online on your home computer or at the public library which provides free access to the internet. http://www.wisconline.com also is a great resource for Wisconsin attractions and businesses to make into an outing like local orchards and local nightlife. You may also want to visit local tourism sights online like the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce, Dane County Chamber of Commerce, Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Green County Tourism - often with just typing the title of the organization into a search engine like Google you can reach the Web site immediately.

Chances are you will find an adventure in Wisconsin this summer that fits your budget for a whole lot of fun for your family. Take an afternoon and plan out some time to spend together enjoying what Wisconsin has to offer just beyond your backyard. Your can pick up or request a free Wisconsin Highway Map from my office. To pick up visit the Wisconsin State Capitol, Room 8 South during business hours or call the office and we will send you a map - 888-549-0027 or 608-266-6670.
