From Bill Oemichen
New Glarus
I applaud The Monroe Times editorial supporting the re-election of Jon Erpenbach to the State Senate, but I support him for different reasons. He deserves re-election because there is no stronger consumer advocate in the state legislature. He, among other initiatives, successfully led passage of the very popular telemarketer "Do-Not-Call" law that more than 2 million Wisconsin households have utilized. He also led passage of a bill regulating, for the first time, traveling sales crews following the tragic deaths of seven young crew members in a 1999 van accident outside of Janesville. Finally, he led passage of a new law that makes clear those selling homes may not misrepresent or fail to note significant defects in their home at the time of sale. This is just a short list of some of his consumer protection accomplishments as our senator.
I served as the state's top Consumer Protection official during the administrations of Republican Governors Tommy G. Thompson and Scott McCallum and was impressed with how often Jon Erpenbach would reach across the partisan aisle to work with us. Based on my experiences at the Capitol, I believe Sen. Erpenbach makes his voting decisions based on the merits of the arguments rather than on the lobbyists attempting to influence his judgment. Our state needs strong leadership during these difficult times and Jon Erpenbach is one senator who has demonstrated he should be returned to Madison on Nov. 2.
