Schools need to answer 'what if?' questions

The New Glarus Board of Education has agreed to submit a joint application with Belleville and Monticello for a School District Consolidation Feasibility Study Grant of up to $10,000 from the Wisconsin Department of Instruction.

The purpose of the grant is simply to see if the districts' underlying facts and figures point to any benefits in pursuing future talks. Any discussion of school district consolidation is a sensitive topic, but the board has an obligation to taxpayers to look at the facts and perhaps answer questions that have been raised over the years. When these "what if?" questions are raised, real information would be more useful than speculation.

If awarded the grant, we are hopeful the information provided will help us to identify measures we can take to control costs while continuing to offer excellent educational opportunities for our students. Discussions about consolidation options, if warranted after gathering the facts will be shared with our parents and community members in a timely fashion. Information from this feasibility study will be available on our district Web site. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to give me a call at 527-2410, ext. 4116.
