Robert J. Cenar: Politicians need some scolding

Congress did away with usury in 1980. Political retreat allowed banking and financial institutions to take control of their business by stripping away regulatory power against them to the detriment of the common public. The moral limits of the banking and financial firms are in disarray and basically ignored today. But the pain and economic harm is felt everywhere. Financial and corporate conglomerates gradually over time have been free to singularly create new terms and complex conditions in the way that they do business to extract more dollars from their customers for profit enhancement. Many of these gimmicks are not necessarily based on fairness or justification. These brazen tactics continue today because there is no vocal authority willing to stop it.

By their actions, our politicians in Washington have demonstrated that they are either oblivious or passively unconcerned about the damaging wrong and injustice that has evolved in promoting the consequential moral decay in our business and financial system through the placation of their responsibilities toward the common good of the nation.

As we view our economy, we see financial abuse, foreclosures, bankruptcies, lower paying jobs, serious inflation, an energy crisis, environmental problems, record national debt and so on. The United States is experiencing a critical period but the Washington agenda for too long has been and is still unchanged.

As a group, our representatives in Washington have exhibited a level of job quality and performance that surely must be rated the lowest in our national history. They are characteristically lacking in numerous categories; some of the obvious deficiencies would include a low level of integrity, moral dedication, self sacrifice, quality of performance and vision. Others may wish to add more to this list.

The main focus coming out of Washington for too many years appear to be the passionate determination of the Democrats to make the Republicans look bad at any cost and vice versa.

When you stop to think about it, it seems inconceivable that all these things are happening to us now with business as usual at the capitol.
