From Doris E. Kegl, Monroe
I wonder how many American people realize what direction the Republicans plan to take this great country. They want full control of our government once again, as they had for much of the Bush administration. We all know America cannot afford to stumble down that path once again. They ran our government, our economy and our international standing into the ditch then, and they will do it again, if given the opportunity. Gov. Walker spins the fantasy that he is interested in balancing the budget, but his initiatives actually shift spending away from the public sphere and toward the accounts of major campaign contributors, such as the Koch Brothers and the DeVos family. These billionaires, now ruling from the highest roasts of power in more than a dozen states, all of them pushing measures designed to disempower and down size, not only public employees and unions, but also the entire work-a-day majority of their state: The middle class itself.
Among other assaults, they are canceling collective bargaining contracts, suppressing union rights, arbitrarily eliminating hundreds of thousands of both public and private sector jobs, doing away with minimum wage protections, cutting unemployment benefits and worker pensions, while giving new tax cuts to corporations and millionaires. They want to make hundreds of billions worth of tax breaks for the wealthy permanent, adding 700 billion dollars to the national debt. They wish to eradicate public schools and privatize them. Their proposed voter ID Act would require IDs, such as a driver's license, before you can vote. This would make it difficult for the older generation. This would also ban university students from using their college-issued IDs as proof of residency for voting. This is done for the reason they usually vote liberal, vote their feelings.
The new Republican politics is to crush their opposition permanently.
Are we going to permit them to do all this, or are we going to stand up for what is right for the majority of the American people? The 2012 election is critical. It is most important that we vote, and it is most important that we vote Democrat.
