Throughout Wisconsin and the football world, there is much consternation and gnashing of teeth over what to do about Brett Favre.
One thing you should not do is blame the Green Bay Packers for the quandary they find themselves in. That being said, the team needs to make sure Favre is playing at Lambeau Field again this fall ... in a Packers jersey.
The future Hall of Fame quarterback wants to play football again, just a few months after announcing his retirement. His team understandably had moved on - it's finally ready to give Aaron Rodgers his chance to prove he's the Packers' quarterback of the future.
But suggestions that the Packers somehow have disrespected Favre or wanted him gone are unsubstantiated and, frankly, absurd. During every offseason for the past few years, the Packers waited patiently while Favre played out his tired drama of deciding whether to return for the next season. The team allowed their quarterback the time and space he needed, and had earned, to make a decision.
And there is growing evidence that even after Favre announced his retirement in March the Packers kept in contact to make sure that's what the quarterback wanted. The door was left open by the team.
Favre kept it closed, until after the team decided it needed to start retooling its offense for Rodgers and moving forward. It is Favre's fault that, now just a couple weeks before training camp, he's asking the team to put the future on hold, again.
That being said, the Packers must find a way to make it work with Favre behind center. He's a Hall of Famer, one of the greatest players in NFL history. You don't turn Hall of Famers away, especially ones who still can play well - as Favre proved last season. The Packers can't let him play anywhere else, certainly not for another NFC Central team. They can't do it to their fans. They can't do it to themselves.
