Opportunity for change on New Glarus board

In February, our village of New Glarus has the opportunity to vote and realize a change in the way our Village Board operates. We have two folks willing to serve as new members, they are Peggy Kruse and Henry Janisch.

The current board has seen the president insult our police chief, and evidently most of them didn't think anything was wrong with this infantile behavior. It took a roomful of passionate people pleading for the library for them to give up the idea of charging rent.

This current board is getting ready to take out loans to purchase land off Wisconsin 39 for a new building to house the village vehicles. This same board also is planning on a huge debt to build a grand swimming pool house. This same board managed to give us our 9 percent increase in water and 38 percent increase in sewer rates over their tenure. While costs increasing are inevitable, perhaps there was a different approach we could have taken? This board recently gave us a storm water utility, too! We are going to be charged for how much runoff each of our properties puts into the sewers when it rains! No credit will be given to those of us who have rain barrels to minimize this effect!

This board claims the library issue is something they care about, but it sure seems that they refuse to even listen to what the township folks have offered. There has been an agreement that seemed fair to all which was coldly rejected by some board members, and I believe it mainly was a control of the money issue.

We have a chance to have a new president and two new members who could add new perspective to this difficult job. Public input should be welcomed instead of seen as a threat. I would like to think new board members and a new president could bring a different and much needed inquisitive attitude.
