To the girl who was picked up for speeding:
I, too, experienced the same type of situation about a year ago. I was coming into South Wayne when a white van came zooming past me. As I came down the hill, I met a cop at the corner. As I was heading out of the other side of town, he proceeded to pull me over. He said that he clocked me at 70 mph. I said that I had my cruise set at 60 mph. I also told him I thought the white van that passed me was going 70 mph, not me. He said he could clock two people at one time and I was the one going 70 mph. He said the gun was off by two points, so he would say I was doing 68 mph.
I received a $160 ticket, and went to the courthouse to fight it. I had to fight it with the same cop that had given me the ticket. I told him about the white van that had passed me, and that I thought he might have clocked them instead. He said that he can clock two cars at the same time. He said he didn't remember every case. I reminded him of when he told me that the gun was off by two points. He said that wasn't possible because he can't use the gun if it's off by anything but .25 mph. He continued to say, "Too bad it wasn't a week ago, because they raised the price of speeding tickets." He said he would see what he could do, for us to wait there, and went into the courtroom.
My mom and I waited for about 20 minutes and he didn't come back. So we went into the treasurer's office and asked if he was coming back. They said we were done, and that he went in the courtroom for another case, so you have to pay the ticket now. He was the judge and the jury in this case.
When my mom and I got home, we wrote a letter to the judge, and after all of that the judge gave me my points back on my license and said he would change it to a speedometer malfunction. After all of the fighting I had to do just to be listened to, I can't imagine getting a ticket for something even less than that. I also agree that fighting for a ticket is a waste of time and money.
It just doesn't seem fair.
