Marilyn Jegerlehner: Opposition to illegal immigration is not bigotry

I am responding to a letter from Jennell Larson, who charged Monroe Alderman Jan Lefevre of "bigotry."

The word "bigotry" means "intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself." It seems that Ms. Lefevre isn't the bigot.

Those in favor of illegal immigration have few, if any, reasons why it is good for America, so they resort to calling those in opposition racist or bigots. The opposition is not against the illegal immigrant (except those who bring drugs into the country, murderers, rapists, thieves, etc.); they are against illegal immigration. There is a true cost of illegal and mass immigration.

There are an estimated 21,498,977 illegal immigrants in this country (and very possibly many more).

Illegal immigration takes away the country's ability to control its population; more than $29 billion has been wired to Mexico since January 2006; more than $259 billion has been wired to Latin America since 2001; cost of social services for illegal immigrants since 1996 is more than $397 billion; there are 4,339,024 children of illegals in public schools; the cost of illegals in K-12 since 1996 is more than $14 billion; 363,704 illegal immigrants are incarcerated at a cost to America of $1,409,796,498; there are 677,365 illegal immigrant fugitives in this country; since 2002 there are 1,972,998 anchor babies; 10,477,761 illegal immigrants are employed in "skilled" jobs in the U.S. (So much for the case that they take jobs that Americans do not want).

Many of the above figures increase every second.

To compare immigrants who come here legally to those who come illegally is absurd and deserves no response.

Illegal Immigrants pay little or no taxes, yet still receive much more than they pay in government services paid for by taxpaying U.S. citizens.

Congress has passed seven amnesties for illegal aliens starting in 1986. This time, the majority of Americans want secured borders before granting amnesty for the eighth and hopefully the last time.

The illegal alien is not to blame for this mess. The blame falls directly on our government, and specifically in our district, the blame falls to Senators Feingold and Kohl, and Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, all of whom, according to their voting records, seem to want this madness to continue.
