Look at voting record, not claims, when choosing your candidate

To the editor:

I am concerned about what Howard Marklein's voting record says about his priorities. Many of his votes in the Wisconsin State Assembly have not focused on jobs (as portrayed in his campaign materials and ads). Instead, much of the time the Assembly was in session was spent by the Republican majority pushing through their social issues agenda that didn't increase employment opportunities. (That's how Wisconsin ended up on the bottom of states in job creation.) Howard Marklein supported this agenda 99 percent of the time.

I'm voting for Maureen May-Grimm, whose uncompromising integrity and principles will put her commitment to her constituents ahead of politics and the interests of corporate or special interest donors. She knows the importance of working hard on the initiatives that will strengthen small businesses, family farms, and Wisconsin-based industry and manufacturing to get people back to work and grow our local economy.

As a retiree living in Monroe, I am also concerned about issues that affect seniors. Howard Marklein has not voted in our interest in that area either. He supported legislation to make it harder for seniors who no longer have a driver's license to vote. He was against protecting the Senior Care program which provides affordable and comprehensive drug coverage to many Wisconsin seniors and low income folks. Senior Care provides exceptional access to prescription drugs with low annual enrollment and copays, no gaps in coverage, and negotiated discounts from drug companies.

Mr. Marklein voted to effectively raise taxes on seniors and low-income families by denying or rolling back the Homestead and Earned Income Tax Credits that make it affordable for them to stay in their own homes. He voted against the Senior Citizen Protection Act which would have held the nursing home industry and staff more accountable when their negligence resulted in the injury or death of a resident.

In deciding how to vote, I'm looking at what Mr. Marklein did, his actual voting record, not what he claims, to know where his priorities really are. I'm also looking at the actual history of Maureen May-Grimm's service to her community, not what some outside private charter school-supported group claims in their slick ads. My vote goes to Maureen May-Grimm.
