Stollenwerk: Sylvester Township — Contentious and Disrespectful
Letter To The Editor

From Karen A Stollenwerk

Monroe-Sylvester Township

To the Editor:

I have paid property taxes to Sylvester Township for 32 years, but because my house does not sit in that township, I cannot vote or run for office. After the 2021 devastation to our trees and roadsides, I began attending monthly meetings, even though board member Dave Schenk and the Schuttes (who lost in the last election) made it clear I had no voice in the public meetings. It is not uncommon for public meetings to become contentious, but Sylvester Township has reached a new high where residents no longer feel safe from ridicule, disrespect and contempt by a board member. The atmosphere is volatile and lines in the sand have been drawn. Elected officials are to be held to a higher standard and expected to conduct themselves with civility. When a board member feels comfortable continually haranguing residents, it is beyond ludicrous. It has become a place you do not want to be in attendance.

Board members are seated with the understanding they will represent all residents, not just friends and neighbors. The roads mentioned in the Schutte letter to the editor are in her and the two incumbent’s neighborhoods. All roads and roadsides need to receive equal consideration for improvement and maintenance. I question whether any of these three have toured the entire township to determine need. These improvements are funded by taxes paid by all of us, and given the recent increase in property taxes, it is time to hold the Board accountable for their spending.

As a nonvoting taxpayer, I must rely on the votes and decisions of Town residents and the Board. I entrust you to make changes through your power at the polls. It is time to unseat two Board members. Let’s bring unity and fiscal responsibility to Sylvester Township. Vote for Terry Reed and Dale Howarth on April 3. Improvements through change on the Board begins with you.
