Stern: Stern for Green County Supervisor District 16
Letter To The Editor

From Lori Stern

Sylvester

To the Editor:

I am running for the non-partisan office of Green County Supervisor, District 16. In my conversations with neighbors, I have gotten many questions about what the job entails. Essentially, the Board of Supervisors functions like a Board of Directors in a business or non-profit. County Supervisors are tasked with oversight and accountability for maintaining the services we all rely on like fire and public safety, road maintenance and plowing, health care, and elder services. The job is non-partisan because the buck stops here, at the local level. Budgets need to be developed and managed related to all of these services. We see the immediate impacts on our neighbors when these systems work or fail.

County Supervisors are also advocates for their community. Issues related to zoning, natural resources, infrastructure, and our ability at the local level to make decisions about these things are critical. Too often rural communities become dumping grounds and test sites without our consent. I have been a lobbyist and am willing to fight for Green County.

The arguments about the size of government and other philosophical issues carried out at the state and national level impact how much money and support we get locally. But at its core, the job of a County Supervisor is to hold the vision for what makes Green County vibrant and resilient, while ensuring that the government services we rely on continue to run effectively.

I am running because I have work and life experiences that I want to offer in the spirit of public service. I have worked in or with every level of government, from schools to national farm policy. I have run a successful business. I have been on non-profit boards and currently direct a non-profit. I have written successful grants. I have managed private and government money. I have supervised people. I have spent my life working to make my community a better, economically viable, and healthier place to live, work and play.

That is the County Supervisor’s job. That is why I am running.
