From Leah Spicer
Candidate for Wisconsin District 51
To the Editor:
Along with many parents in the 51st District, Tuesday was a special day for our family. We sent our oldest child off to public school for the first time.
On that very same day, I was so glad to hear the news about Governor Evers’ proposal to increase state spending in support of public education. His proposal would also reduce the tax burden for education, which, with soaring inflation, would provide much needed relief. Wisconsin families deserve that.
Evers gets it, he gets how important our public schools are to our rural communities — for our children, their teachers, for all of us.
In sharp contrast, the Republican candidate for governor is totally out of touch with our rural communities. His negative response to Evers’ proposal is not surprising, as he sent his three kids to private schools in New York and Connecticut where the annual high school tuition ranged from just over $20,000 a year to $57,500 a year. Good for him; impossible for the rest of us.
Regardless of what type of schooling Wisconsin residents choose for their children, fully funding public schools is important and must be a priority. I thank Governor Evers for putting kids, teachers and schools first!
