Sachs: Vote YES for Monroe schools
Letter To The Editor

Chris Sachs

Monroe

To the Editor:

My name is Chris Sachs and I am voting YES for the Monroe School District Referendum in November. I have been an employee of the district for over 25 years, mostly as a substitute teacher but have had stints at the Virtual School, as a study hall supervisor and working with behavior disorder (BD) students.

I am originally from New Jersey but met a Midwest Farmer’s Daughter while serving in the Navy and moved to her hometown of Monroe 30 years ago. The town I grew up in NJ will always be my hometown, but Monroe is my home. Monroe has a lot to offer — a safe and inviting place to live, many parks, a great YMCA, a top 20 Rural and Community Hospital, a beautiful and historic downtown square with a vibrant Main Street Organization and a plethora of friendly and generous citizens — to name just a few. I also strongly believe that Monroe has a school district that truly cares for its students, well-being and providing for them a quality education.

A top reason for choosing a town to move to is the quality of education. Although the high school has unquestionably served our community with distinction since 1958, it no longer meets todays and future educational needs as well as for security and accessibility for disabled students (not to mention the mechanical and structural deficiencies). If Monroe wants to not only remain a great place to live, but to grow and attract young families, Monroe has to provide quality education with modern facilities and a new high school will do just that. To paraphrase “Field of Dreams”-Build it and they will come.

Although I grew up only 30 miles from New York City and from the high point in my own town you could see the NYC skyline, I love the ruralness of Monroe (lots of places to ride my bike but too many hills). I am proud to call Monroe my home and have no intention of ever leaving (well, at least not to NJ, my wife says to much traffic). Vote YES!!
