Jacobson: Vote ‘No’ on referendum questions
Letter To The Editor

From: Jenna Jacobson

Oregon

To the Editor:

This August 13th, there will be two more constitutional questions on your ballot. These two changes impact the checks and balances in our state government.

Wisconsin law enables the governor to direct federal money where it is needed. These changes would require the legislature to approve spending the money. The legislature hasn’t met since February. This would slow — or stop — the process!

After the recent tornadoes, Gov. Evers declared a state of emergency. That can include federal money for recovery efforts. The governor needs to respond quickly when emergencies arise. Waiting for the legislature wastes valuable time.

On July 5, 2024, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in Evers v. Marklein that the legislature has been illegally encroaching on the Governor’s role. The legislature directs federal money through the collaborative budget process. They also conduct audits on government spending to create laws that protect Wisconsinites. Removing the Governor’s check on the legislature could slow down money needed for rural broadband access and roads.

As your state representative, I have seen examples of both bipartisanship and obstruction.

These constitutional changes are not bipartisan and will create more obstruction.

I am hopeful that with the passage of fair maps, more legislators will work across the aisle.

It is important for the legislature to collaborate with the governor and each other. That is a value I hear from voters over and over again when knocking doors. Please join me in voting no on both constitutional amendment ballot questions can be directed to Jenna@JennaforAssembly.com.
