Letter to the Editor: Schools should support co-ed sports

Ninth grade students in Stephanie Hurt’s English class at Brodhead High School have participated in the National Writing Project’s College, Career, and Community-Ready Writer’s Program (C3WP) all year. Students learned to consider multiple perspectives around an issue and to write evidence-based arguments asking for change. For their final argument, students chose an issue they care about, researched the conversation surrounding the issue, and wrote an evidence-based letter to a real audience, such as these letters to the editor.

To the editor:

In the world of sports it started off that girls could never play sports with boys. But today the question is that should girls be allowed to be able to play sports with boys on the same team and same sports. Some people think that girls should not be able to play sports with boys because they think that girls are not capable of doing some of the things that boys are doing. There should be more schools that need to have or try coed sports.

First, some people think that coed sports are not a good idea however, according to Why Co-Ed Teams In Youth Sports Can Work “Not only do coed sports diversify a team with various skills, they also encourage mutual respect between the genders, they cultivate more of a variety of skills among teammates, they allow players to develop a new perspective of the sport.” According to Caroline Mayor every time she stepped on the soccer field. “I think that they should give it a try and see how it goes, and if it doesn’t work out then they should just be glad that the kids got to experience it.”

First, on the other hand people think that trying coed sports would be a good idea to try out. According to studies show that women tend to be better team players, while boys focus more on individual success. Let’s be honest–you need both skills in order to “go far” in your athletic career. By having boys and girls playing together at a young age boys might learn how to be better team players while girls learn how to take more leadership on themselves. This shows that it’s a good thing that their giving it a chance and that I believe that having coed sports is a good thing because it gives guys and girls a chance to play together and develop social and leadership skills. It also gives them to experience the chance to play with different genders. Also gives the chance to play different sports that they maybe couldn’t before. This is why I think having coed sports is a good idea.
