Letter to the Editor: Help us make sure children get their next meal
Letter To The Editor

From Yvonne Schutte

National Association of Letter Carriers

To the editor:

The National Association of Letter Carriers, along with the National Association of Rural Carriers, and with cooperation from the United States Postal Service, would like to ask for your participation in the largest single day food drive in the United States.

This year the Food Drive is scheduled for Saturday, May 11. This is the 27th annual food drive, and the total collected throughout the United States is well over 1.5 billion pounds.

One in five families are food insecure in the United States, and one in four of those people are children, which is a very startling statistic. One in 10 people don’t have any idea where their next meal is coming from. These are our friends and neighbors.

I couldn’t even imagine not knowing where my next meal is coming from.

Our role is even more vital this year as families in unprecedented numbers are struggling to make ends meet. The food pantry shelves have been emptied from the Holiday Food Drives. This is a critical time of year for food insecure children. School food programs that insure that children are adequately fed during the school year are not available in the summer months.

You can help by placing non-perishable food items by your mailbox on Saturday, May 11, and your letter carrier will make sure that it is all donated to the Green County Food Pantry, right here in Monroe.

If anyone is able to help the Green County Food Pantry volunteers sort all of the food donated, at the Post Office on May 11, please call 608-325-9686.

Please help us Stamp Out Hunger on May 11!
