To the editor:
I recently read David Deininger’s Letter to the Editor. As a former Republican as well, I can totally relate to what he wrote. The Republican party is no longer recognizable. It is beholden to out of state “dark” money and powerful interest groups.
Since the beginning of the Walker years we have witnessed an erosion of local control, the scape-goating of teachers and others, the removal of bipartisan oversight groups, overt gerrymandering, the suppression of certain voters, the increased politicalization of the Supreme Court, abandonment of environmental concerns, and a divide and conquer philosophy that has ripped the state apart to name a few.
In addition, the party has silenced anyone who would speak out against its smothering policies. Therefore, as a moderate, I believe that a change is critical at this time in our history and it has to come at the ballot box. The British historian, Lord Acton, is quoted as saying, “Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely.” The Republicans have, regrettably, proven this to be true.
This is not personal regarding our current representatives. Nevertheless, they have proven to be powerless to alter the juggernaut of Republican devastation in our State.
Fortunately, Kriss Marion and Jeff Wright are extremely qualified and motivated to make a change. I know both of them personally and have found them to be singularly devoted to children, education, our community, as well as supportive of business while protecting the environment. I might add that the “dark money” ads against them are pathetic in their dishonest portrayals. Ignore them. You don’t see either of these candidates stooping to those tactics. These candidates deserve a chance and with Tony Evers as Governor, this State might just regain some of its lost reputation.
