To the Editor:
There was an article by Gary Mays about the failed school referendum on the front page of the Feb. 1 issue of the Monroe Times. He quoted Rich Deprez (school board president) as saying “The simple fact again is that the public schools are not funded properly by the legislature”. He also reported the State of Wisconsin has a budget surplus of over $4.5 billion dollars. I suggest that the local school boards get together with the state board of education and demand more funding from the state. The state could give money to the schools directly or cut the amount of taxes owed to the state so the taxpayer could support the local schools. The fact is that taxpayers should not be looked on as an unlimited source of income for the schools — no matter how important school are to our future.
