With his announcement on social media over the weekend, former President Trump continues to attempt to grift away Libertarian Party voters with a cheap ploy to buy votes with another token proposal that barely scratches the surface of what should be done. First it was eliminating taxes on tips, then it was embracing crypto currencies, now in the latest attempt of pandering to voters by copying popular Libertarian ideas, Donald Trump is claiming to support decriminalizing cannabis.
“In Florida, like so many other States that have already given their approval, personal amounts of marijuana will be legalized for adults with Amendment 3...We do not need to ruin lives & waste Taxpayer Dollars arresting adults with personal amounts of it on them.” — Donald Trump on Truth Social
Since the formation of the Libertarian Party in 1971, Libertarians have believed that only actions that infringe on the rights of others can properly be termed “crimes”. In particular, we advocate for the repeal of laws restricting the production, sale, possession, or use of prohibited drugs and medicines. While Trump’s call for personal use is a solid first step towards true liberty and freedom that all Americans are promised in the Declaration of Independence and are protected by the Constitution, it is just one more tiny handout to acquire the praise and adoration he so desperately seeks and requires. The ‘War on Drugs’ has done nothing more than waste taxpayer money at the expense of citizens’ freedom of choice.
The Libertarian Party would like to invite anyone who approves of policies like this but who do not approve of Trump to consider their candidate, Chase Oliver.
