To the Editor:
As the school year concludes, so too does the long-standing German language program in the School District of Monroe — one of the casualties of the failed operating referendum last February. While this is a sad moment, it’s also an opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to the many people who supported the program over the years.
Since arriving in Monroe to teach German in 1987, I’ve had the honor of working with dedicated colleagues, administrators, and community members who helped grow a thriving World Languages program. I’m especially grateful to Larry Larson and Lisa Hendrickson for their early collaboration. I am lucky to have shared many years of teaching and travel adventures with my dear friend and colleague, Kristin Bansley. Thank you to fellow German teachers Kam Simonis, Joan Neilsen, and Alla Schwarz. A special thanks to Michelle Kister and Ann Prophett for teaching German at the High School and Middle School these last several years to fill the needs following emotional losses and changes.
The German Student Exchange Program changed many lives, beginning in 1988 and continuing through last year with only two short pauses: once following 9/11 and once during the COVID pandemic. Over 300 Monroe students took the leap to experience German life firsthand, while an equal number of German students were welcomed into Monroe homes. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of host families, supportive parents, local businesses, and our partner schools in Germany.
To all the students who chose to learn German, thank you. It was a joy to share in your curiosity, growth, and laughter. I hope the lessons you learned about language, culture, perspectives, and human connection stay with you always.
With heartfelt thanks and one final Dankeschön.
