To the Editor:
In light of the upcoming County Circuit Court election, we must ask ourselves a question: What makes a good judge? Perhaps most importantly, a judge must be committed to upholding the equal rights of all people.
But where do these rights come from? Judge candidate Peter Kelly answers this question the same way our Founding Fathers did in the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Peter Kelly believes that our rights come from our Creator, God. Our rights do not come from the government, and therefore the government cannot take them away.
To protect these God-given rights, our Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution and created our American system of government. They recognized that the best way to preserve liberty was to limit and divide government among different branches. As a candidate for the judicial branch, Peter Kelly sees the wisdom of our Constitution. He is committed to upholding the Constitution, and is opposed to judges overstepping their authority by rewriting laws according to their opinions.
I believe that Court Commissioner Peter Kelly is the most committed to upholding our rights on the Green County Circuit Court because he understands the foundation of our rights. I will be supporting Peter Kelly with my vote in the primaries on February 16, and in the general election on April 6, and I encourage all of my fellow Green County residents to do the same.
