Letter to the editor: We need to investigate Trump

To the editor:

If it weren't alarming enough that our new president saw millions of people that didn't exist, word that he just kicked the director of National Intelligence and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff off of the National Security Council to replace them with Steve Bannon should be. Bannon ran a fake news/white supremacist web site, and said in an interview last year: "I'm a Leninist. (Lenin) wanted to destroy the state, and that's my goal too. I want to bring everything crashing down."'

Then there's Rex Tillerson, Trump's choice for Secretary of State, who was presented with Russia's highest foreign honor by none other than Vladimir Putin - and Mike Flynn, Trump's pick for National Security Advisor, who is well known for promoting wild extremist "alt-right" conspiracy theories - and has himself dined with Putin.

Recently, memos uncovered question Trump's direct participation in Putin's meddling in our election. Our intelligence agencies also admitted Russia might have a dossier containing damaging "personal and financial information" on Trump. Trump dismissed this, as did Putin. Now we find that shortly after our intelligence agencies received that information, one of Russia's highest cyber-intelligence agents was grabbed in the middle of a meeting and rushed out with a bag over his head - never to be seen again.

Trump's tax returns are key to absolving him of suspicions that he's deeply in debt to shady Russian investors, especially since his own son admitted in 2008 that "Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets. We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia." But last week, Kellyanne Conway, Trump's chief surrogate, revealed that he has absolutely no intentions of ever releasing those tax returns, and claimed that Americans don't care about them.

Meanwhile, Trump is alienating our allies, and providing excellent recruitment material to Muslim extremists with his Muslim ban, while he continues to aggressively wage war on our own press, attempting to muzzle and de-legitimize it. Historically, this has always been the first step in every right-wing takeover of a government.

If all of this doesn't raise the hairs on the back of the neck of every patriotic red-blooded American, there's something seriously wrong with them. An independent special counsel must thoroughly investigate Trump's ties to Russia - and he must release all of his tax returns immediately.
