To the editor:

As leaders of local companies, we are proud to have our organizations based in Monroe. We are very proud of our city - its great heritage, wonderful people, quality of life, and the strong school system that has flourished here for so many years. We also know that the long-term success of our companies is directly tied to the long-term success of our community. Critical to that long-term success is the health and quality of our schools.

The quality of our schools affects us in at least two direct ways. First, we draw heavily on our local community to staff our growing businesses. We find that our best employees are those with local roots. A quality, performance-based education is key to preparing local talent. Secondly, we all occasionally need to recruit talented individuals from outside our local community. We know from experience that, after these candidates express an interest in opportunities within our businesses, the next key issue in their consideration of a possible move here is the quality and local support of our schools. Without a strong school system, we will struggle in this recruitment process and, we believe, Monroe as a community will suffer.

In our businesses, success is directly related to a consistent focus on performance and continuous improvement. We believe the Monroe School District has demonstrated this same focus and deserves our support. In our businesses, we know that we have many areas to improve on to continue our success into the future. This is no different in the School District. We have confidence in the track record and future performance of the School Board and district staff. They have been working hard to get the job done for all of us and we have confidence this will continue into the future.

You can find many details about the district's budget and performance issues on their website. We have reviewed these details and encourage you to do the same. Based on that review, we believe the district has earned our trust and support for this referendum.

As business leaders, we know the importance of investment for the long term, even in challenging times. That is an essential element for success for both businesses and communities. Please join us in voting "Yes" on both Monroe School District referenda questions on the ballot Nov. 8. Your "Yes" votes are votes for a strong future for all of us.
