To the editor:

When I was young and growing up on a dairy farm in Green County, there couldn't have been a more perfect place to grow up in. The county is perfectly located and the right terrain for dairy farming, enough rolling hills with limestone in, making it ideal to grow alfalfa in and enough low land where you could plant corn. You soon found out that the corn needed limestone just as bad as the hay did, plus other key elements that the soil needed. So any wise farmer always took a soil test.

You should realize that no chain is stronger than the weakest link. So after graduating from eighth grade, I spent a number of years on the dairy farm before I enlisted in the Air Force, which I really enjoyed doing. After serving four years in the Air Force, I had enough money saved that I could start farming on my own by renting my Grampa's farm.

Everybody gets older and hopefully, the young people replace them. I came across a crippled man who made out my income taxes, who told me the secret in life of how to make money. While you are at a job you enjoy, you might as well make some money. Mr. Vinger said the secret was that you have to like paying income tax. It means you have a job and if you are making money, you're going to get the farm paid for. That is, if you don't have too many vices, such as smoking, drinking or gambling. I believe gambling is just foolish, smoking is not good for your health and an occasional beer, along with a cheese sandwich, isn't going to kill anyone. So long as you never try to drive a car or any other vehicle when you are drunk.

That's why as an independent voter, when Gov. Walker took the income taxes off the table for the benefit of his rich friends, I knew we had too many important items to make dairy farming successful, such as roads and bridges and that's why I'm voting Democrat on Nov. 4. Democrat President Franklin D. Roosevelt enjoyed paying income tax and Republican "Fighting Bob" LaFollette did as well. So like what you are doing and it starts Nov. 4 and the Democrats are doing a better job of debating their opponents.

Vote Democrat.
