Blanchardville

To the editor:

My family moved to Green County in 2010. Our kids go to Pecatonica Area School District in Blanchardville, but our love for hockey drew us to the Monroe Youth Hockey Association in 2014.

Over the past four years my son and I have spent a couple weeknights every week (mid-October through early-March) on 4th Ave at SLICE. The last three years my wife and daughter also started joining us to travel around Wisconsin for 18 of 19 straight weekends of games; that is the hockey season.

We. Love. It.

My son's PeeWee B team (12 boys - between 11 and 13 years old) played well enough this season to qualify for the WAHA State 3B tournament on March 10 and 11 in Waupaca.

They. Played. Great!

They rolled through the state tournament's three games: 7-0, 9-0, 6-1. It's a weekend none of those kids (or their parents) will soon forget; but on to my main point with this letter of thanks:

1) Every kid on this team should get a ton of credit for their state championship performance. Everyone, EVERYONE, on this team had at least a point (goal or assist) or shutout in the tournament. Thank you.

2) We had the most fans at every state game (including the second game versus the host team). For Sunday's championship game Monroe fans probably outnumbered our opponents 3-1 ... and THEN the PeeWee A team voted that they should take a surprise detour to Waupaca ("on the way home" from Marshfield) to surprise us and frenzy up the crowd even more. Awesome. WOW! Thank you.

The weekend was already a tremendous success. The bus ride back to Monroe was wonderful. We were feeling perfect. Then:

3) The bus stopped near a ramp outside of Monroe where a caravan of police cars and fire trucks (not 2, more like 10) was waiting to escort us through town and back to SLICE where a crowd of MYHA families were waiting (with our cars all decorated with "STATE CHAMPS!") to cheer us home. To anyone who had a part in making this surprise welcome happen, it was very, very special: THANK YOU!!!

Monroe, just like starting your Cheese Days parade with Swiss brown cows and cheesemakers, you do things right.

The energy of the family that is MYHA is great.

Go Avalanche!
