From Richard Daniels
Monroe Arts Center Director On behalf of the organizers from the Green County Historical Society, Monroe Theatre Guild, Monroe Public Library, and the Monroe Arts Center
To the editor:
To commemorate the end of the American Civil War 150 years ago, the cultural organizations of Monroe developed a program of music, presentations, publications, and art. The first event occurred on March 14. It included a small Civil War Encampment, cannon fire, a living historian, and a concert in the evening by the celebrated Wisconsin 1st Brigade Band. These events were held at the Monroe Arts Center. It was a fitting kick-off to what is proving to be a very popular program.
The organizers are grateful to the City of Monroe officials for their good and efficient efforts in thoroughly vetting the permit applications for the encampment and cannon fire. We thank Carol Stamm, city clerk; Daryl Rausch, fire chef; and Frederick Kelley, chief of police, for their expert advice and assistance. We also thank Mayor William Ross for his encouragement.
Most officials only hear complaints, so we hope this will be a refreshing change. Thank you all.
