Monroe

To the editor:

Being one of the docents for the city of Monroe, I receive great pleasure wearing my Swiss milking shirt giving tour groups informational talks about the great city of Monroe. The groups have been large, as many as 50 people, and small, as few as four. These inquisitive tourists are mainly interested in the history of cheesemaking, the Swiss invasion of the 1860s, and the colorful anecdotal stories about the city and its people. I derive immense joy lifting up our city and its wonderful culture.

I am often asked about Limburger cheese and its origins. I entertain the visitors with the usual good-humored jokes about the smell, or that Limburger is a form of Swiss birth control. But I needed more, so I reached out to Hans and Bobbie Bernet for a Swiss limerick. They were so kind to provide one that has thrilled the visitors. I thought I would share it with the community giving full credit where credit is due.

Have you ever tried Limburger cheese?

The smell, might bring you to your knees.

But, if you would just taste it,

I know you won't waste it,

And say, can I have some more Limburger please?

So, there you have it. Hope to see you soon at Baumgartner's for a Limburger sandwich.
