Letter to the editor: Poor VA care nothing new

To the editor:

One of the scandals in the news is the shameful care our deserving veterans are receiving in our VA care centers. Well, this is nothing new. My father, a WWI veteran, was wounded in France and later gased as he slept in his fox hole. His buddies used their gas masks so his lungs were severely damaged. Upon discharge, he was informed he had less than one year to live. Did he tell anyone, not for years. His doctor got him in a VA hospital as it was during the depression. After being there for sometime and no doctor in sight, his buddies informed him of their long wait. He planned his escape by informing a close-by relative to meet him at back exit.

Imagine our shock finding him in the rocking chair upon arrival from church. He only had his night ware but they did send it later upon request.

I remember him saying "the government doctor being paid monthly even if they don't even see us." Why has it been going on forever without exposure and correction? Is billions of dollars the answer to fix it.
