Letter to the editor: Police need to crack down on texting drivers

Monroe

To the editor:

While some people in Monroe believe it is appropriate behavior to drink and drive drunk, there is even a more dangerous behavior rampant here: Texting while driving.

I recently saw an adult person driving and texting by Lincoln School, barely missing a little girl. That could have been an elderly lady with a walker. No human life is worth hitting with a vehicle while drinking or texting. Texting while driving is dangerous. Monroe police should be more alert to these idiots.

When you text while driving, you are not alert, paying attention to the people and events around you, or really care if you hit someone. What is the violation for drinking while driving? What is the violation for texting while driving? The results are you can kill when you do. Is texting worth a life? Stop texting and driving. Stop the car, pull off the road, and text. Never drive and text. Or else our kids and elderly will be killed.

I realize Chief Fred Kelley is overworked, underpaid, and the finest chief we have had in years, but he needs to clamp down on texting while driving. The sheriff too.

Or you may be the next victim hit by a car testing while driving. Cars don't kill people. Texting and drunk people do.
