Letter to the editor: No city-wide garage sales this fall

To the editor:

We are writing this letter as a reminder that the fall city-wide garage sale will not be held this year as already previously indicated. Last fall we had 26 participants for the event. With only 27 registered sellers last August, and numerous other sellers setting up their sales without registration to be on the map, taking advantage of the advertising others support, we could not continue having a Monroe city-wide sale in the fall.

We need 50 registrations in order to cover the costs of advertising in the area newspapers and radio stations plus the cost of the thousand maps copied to be distributed throughout Monroe. The $10 registration fee paid by participants makes the event self-supporting. The hours spent in preparing and copying the map and delivering maps to grocery stores and gas stations are all volunteer time.

We will again schedule a spring 2016 city-wide garage sale Friday and Saturday, May 6 and 7. We will also try to plan for a fall 2016 sale if there are 50 registered participants.

Please be advised that the city-wide sale you may have heard about through Facebook for September this year is not the city-wide sale supported by the Chamber as in the past.
