Fort Atkinson

To the editor:

I would like congratulate the Monroe Boys Basketball team on a successful season. I know their record might not reflect it, but what happened at the Fort Atkinson game on Thursday, Feb. 20 proved differently.

The Cheesemakers held a 13-point lead with nine seconds left on the clock during Fort's senior night. Fort coach Mike Hintz summoned a foreign exchange student to the scorers' table to enter the game. The student had played the season with the Fort freshmen team, but being senior night, he was allowed to suit up for the varsity game. Not only did the Fort players want to get him a shot, but even some of the Monroe players recognized what was going on, and gave the Fort guard a clear path to the exchange student. He received the pass and promptly swished a 15-foot jump shot as the buzzer sounded. The Fort gym erupted with delight.

Even though the Cheesemakers and Blackhawks had less than desirable seasons, both teams came out as champions on that night. Those nine short seconds will clearly be remembered by many for a lifetime.
