Scott Thompson threw a congratulatory party for two of his employees - Martha Bernet and Bernie Schultz, whose combined total years worked at WEKZ-AM are 103 with Martha being there 60 years and Bernie 43.
It takes a lot of people to run the radio station since it started in 1951 and it was good to see him honor two long-time employees. There were Republicans there, Democrats there, Independents and a lot of senior citizens. I talked to Sly Sylvester, who represents an independent view of politics, who definitely favors the views of unions, who has a program on WEKZ-FM from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, as well as Scott Thompson, who favors Republican views and is on in the early morning.
I would say both individuals are trying to get to the bottom of what is causing our problems in politics. I personally feel one of the biggest problems in both parties is - what should the minimum wage standard be? It's presently $7.25 an hour, which has been a standard, considering we have the cost of inflation, which affects all people - young and old. Democrats would like to see it raised to at least $10 per hour, which I feel is a legitimate level after as many years as its been at $7.25.
Now, consider, if you were young and wanted to move out of your parent's home, consider getting married, consider even buying or renting a home, as well as maintaining a car and buying the gas to run it to get back and forth to work. I've talked to quite a few people on this subject and I'd like to talk to a lot more to see what their opinion is on this subject.
AARP is going to have a meeting in Miami, Florida on May 14-16 where I hope they invite all the presidential candidates to discuss the minimum wage issue and Social Security itself. The Democrats want to keep Social Security as an "Earned Benefit," which we paid for and the Republicans want to call it an "Entitlement" and invest the money in the stock market. The Social Security must not fluctuate, if the seniors are going to have any standard of living at all and get their bills paid.
