Facts aren't quite accurate with Sen. Howard Marklein's article in The Monroe Times on Monday, Feb. 29.
First of all the schools don't write checks for $6,639 to the open enrollment school of the specific family's choice. The $6,339 is subtracted automatically before School District A receives its allotted money amount.
Second, referring to the paragraph with the example of School District A and School District B: That paragraph sounds like School District B is double-dipping with the state's monies. School District B is already receiving aid for its school. Now it is getting additional money for added students, which don't cost any additional dollars. If School District B is adding more teachers and expense, then it is over flowed with open enrolled students. This would be double-dipping all state's tax dollars. The amount of referendums with our area schools, I suggest you start having fact information for your articles.
Third, do you want all small schools to close? This article sure suggests that is your goal. Refer to the paragraph about Ithaca, Highland, New Lisbon, Argyle, Riverdale, and Royall school districts. Ithaca, Highland and New Lisbon increased with students but Argyle, Riverdale and Royall all decreased. Where is your loyalty and concern to protect our small schools and tax dollars? Your loyalty should be with all schools.
Therefore, a new family that wishes to open enroll to another school, it should be mandatory that new family should visit or attend the home school before enrolling elsewhere. They should know and understand what the home school offers for quality education. I didn't receive any reassurance from this article that you have concern for any small school losing revenue, tax dollars and school aid - including your 17th District.
