Letter to the editor: Marklein swayed by special interests

To the editor:

Howard Marklein's ads would have one believe that he carries the same set of rural values that he learned growing up on a dairy farm in Spring Green. Simply put, his actions as a lawmaker prove just the opposite. His values favor big business, large private corporations, and special interest groups at the expense of common middle class people he claims to represent. While representing basically the same people as Republican State Sen. Dale Schultz, many of his votes on issues are directly opposite those of Schultz's. Some of these issues include the following: Mining; Voter I.D.; Act 10; Concealed Carry; Land sales to foreign entities; Expansion of voucher schools.

Consider the "mining issue." There was a $700,000 secret deal that donated money from Gogebic Taconite, the mining company, to a group colluding with Republicans who controlled the Assembly, State Senate, and the Executive Branch. One week later, the mining bill became law.

Let's look at another issue - voucher schools. A voucher school is a for-profit, private school, funded 100 percent by taxpayer dollars. Republicans, including Marklein, want to expand them. In 2014-2015, the amount budgeted for voucher schools is $212 million. This is $212 million of taxpayers' money taken from public schools. Unlike public schools, voucher schools have little or no accountability; they can select who is or isn't admitted and expel students after a certain length of time but keep the tax money for them; and they operate on a for-profit basis. Unlike voucher schools, 86 percent of Wisconsin's public schools meet or exceed state expectations.

Marklein's ads are sponsored by The American Federation for Children Action Fund - the number one pro-voucher funding group. Howard Marklein, who has $300,000 at his disposal, and the backing of these high powered unlimited spending special interest groups, may have been raised on rural values, but he now has become a puppet for large corporations and special interest groups.

Please vote for Pat Bomhack for the 17th State Senate on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
