Letter to the Editor: Magna Carta still applies

To the editor:

I dusted off the Magna Carta the other day. I wanted to refresh myself with the words it contained such as government accountability and protection of human rights. But there is more. The barons threatened King John of England with civil war if he did not stop misruling. King John signed the Magna Carta on the plains of Runnymede on June 15, 1215.

The Magna Carta is widely viewed as one of the most important legal documents in history. It is one of the earliest ancestors of the United States Constitution. It states in part people "shall enjoy all their liberties and free customs. And no one can be denied or be delayed rights or justice."

The barons of today are the members of Congress who are supposed to serve the people like the barons of 1215 but they can't because they are buried beneath an avalanche of money.

Psychologists say that nothing tops the greed-laden pursuit of wealth. And a millionaire's or billionaire's mega-fortune quest has no end point. They need more and more all the time. We Americans must get out of this dangerous game now. Rise up democrats. This is your time.

Especially now. The Republicans circled President Trump and one by one spoke obsequiously as if Trump deserved any praise for a tax bill that was so unfair. Orin Hatch was the most sickening as he praised the president as the most glorious, wonderful president we have ever had. Come on. Whatever happened to Lincoln, both Roosevelts, and of course Jefferson and Washington?

Brand this in your brains and your hearts, Democrats. Say you are ready to fight back. When it is time for elections, you will have plenty of ammunition. Taxes for the rich declined from 37 percent to 20 percent. It didn't hurt that half the Senate are millionaires.

These Republicans claim that the wealth will trickle down in the form of higher wages and a better standard of living for workers. AT&T said they would give their employees a $1,000 bonus at the end of this year. What they didn't say is that they were laying off 600 employees.

Trickle down economics didn't work for Reagan and Bush. And it won't work for Trump. The wealthy are not interested in making life better for their workers because the greed laden pursuit of wealth is so strong.
