From Richard Daniels
Director, Monroe Arts Center
Monroe
To the editor:
Thank you to the people who attended the Open House at the Monroe Arts Center on Thursday and those who expressed a desire to attend but could not. Please know my years at MAC have been satisfying and rewarding. The Board of Directors has been supportive and provided the latitude to be creative in an administrative position. The staff is as dedicated, conscientious and good-hearted as any I have known.
The organization was fragile when I assumed the position. I think it is as sound as it is going to be under my direction. Under my direction, I can report MAC expanded programming, enhanced activities, rehabilitated the church exterior, concert hall, upper and lower lobbies, constructed a $3 million addition and is putting the finishing touches on the $100,000 State Matching Grant and meeting the Colony Brands $700,000 Challenge Grant. MAC has raised $6 million for capital and endowment. The annual operating budget has grown from $175,000 to $424,000 this past year.
The Monroe community is wonderfully generous and its support for the development of MAC has been overwhelming. I see the pride our patrons take in our progress each time they enter the new building. I am proud of what we have accomplished as an arts organization and as a community.
There are so many people to acknowledge from members of the community and patrons of the MAC to board members, committee members and other generous volunteers. Almost 500 people and businesses donated to the Legacy Campaign alone. Special thanks, however, must go to Ron Spielman, Bob Duxstad and Sue Barrett for their good council and advice over the years. Thanks to Martha Etter Luedeking for her advice and support. Special thanks, too, must go to John Baumann for rescuing the Legacy Campaign and making the new addition possible. Without John and Colony Brands - the Medici of Monroe - much less would have been accomplished. Thanks also to Chris and Lee Knuteson, Shelley and Mike Muranyi, and Chris and Chuck Wellington, who will have to represent MAC patrons. Finally, I'll ask Barb Woodriff and Pete Guenther to stand in for the many friends I have made in Monroe.
